Livigno: high, snow-sure and duty-free

Livigno (1,816 m) is a long valley town with two ski areas on either side – Mottolino and Carosello 3000 – with around 115 km of pistes up to 2,800 m, a snow record that makes it one of the most reliable resorts in Italy and a famous snow park. Thanks to its historic duty-free status, fuel, perfume, electronics and alcohol are cheaper than anywhere nearby, and the pedestrian main street has hundreds of shops.

Livigno hosted the freestyle and snowboard events of the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics in February 2026, which brought new lifts and hotels.

The journey from Innsbruck Airport to Livigno

From Innsbruck we drive west to Landeck and up the Inn valley to the Swiss border at Martina, then through the Engadin to Zernez and through the Munt la Schera tunnel into Livigno. About 2 hours 40 minutes; the tunnel is single-lane with traffic lights, so short waits are normal.

In winter the passes on the Italian side (Forcola, Foscagno from Bormio) can be slow or closed; the Engadin route is the reliable one and our drivers know it well.
